Here’s a snippet from a recent SoundCloud email:

Since when is the term “ambient” malleable? I admit all sorts of artists classify their endeavors as “ambient”, when they should classify their music as something else. I especially detest what I call “piano Muzak” being classified as ambient. I have always associated ambient with something created on a synthesizer as the main instrument. Piano as the main instrument takes the genre outside of its origins and makes it more of a modern classical music realm. Or go find your own name for the genre. And apparently SoundCloud is further stretching the ambient genre with “diverse and multi-disciplinary“ bullshit. I wonder how much of this content is AI generated? It gets to be impossible to find true ambient artists with the expansion of the “ambient” label. Just my two cents.
